The St. Louis River Night Rodeo in Carlton, Minn., combines theatrical effects with whitewater kayaking. For a single night (July 24 this year), a stretch of the St. Louis River's famous rapids are morphed into a dramatic set in which underwater gelled lights turn waterfalls blood red and fog machines fill the gorge with an artificial haze.
The County Road 210 bridge above the river doubles as a viewing area for spectators. Music is played loud, and cables strung across the river hold stage lights that illuminate kayakers from 8 p.m. until midnight.
While it's not a formal competition, kayakers compete with each other, performing tricks in the rapids. Spins, enders, pirouettes and waterfall drops are exhibited one after the other by a group of 10 to 20 boaters vying for the crowd's approval.
Fifteen feet from the edge of the waterfall, I gripped my paddle and pushed out into the current. Immediately, the swift black water pulled me toward the edge. The spotlight shined on the bow of my boat, the crowd roared above and I took a quick breath before plunging into the deep-red foam at the base of the falls.
